THE DIVOT STORY
The Golden Divot began in Sawtell in 2001 with three school mates, a round of golf and a simple idea. Make a day of it. Twenty six years later, we’re still here.
What started as a golf day between mates has grown into one of Sawtell’s great annual traditions. Along the way we’ve collected plenty of characters, a few questionable handicaps, some ordinary golf and some very serious silverware.
THIS IS THE DIVOT
The Golden Divot is a little different to your typical golf day. This is individual stroke golf. No Ambrose. No hiding behind your playing partner. Every shot counts and every player signs for their own score.
But a bad round doesn’t mean your day is done. Your score is also combined with your playing partner’s score for the Rusty 10 Iron, our two person teams event. So even if the Green Jacket has disappeared over the train line on the 12th, you can still get your name on some serious Divot silverware.
Not a golfer? You’re still very welcome. We’ve developed a few Divot rules and handicap adjustments over the years to give everyone a chance. Some would say we’ve been a little too generous. That’s about to change.

MORE THAN JUST GOLF
The Golden Divot has always been about mateship and community. We are not a registered charity. The Golden Divot is first and foremost a golf event.
From time to time, when the Divot is in a position to help someone in our local community who could use a hand, we’re proud to do so. We don’t make a big deal of it. It’s simply part of what the Divot is about.
The Divot keeps evolving, but the reason we turn up every year hasn’t changed. Play the game. Back your mates. Respect the traditions. Create a few new stories. And make sure there’s another generation around to do it all again.
